I am also a psychologist, but I was also reared on the wrong study habits that many of my peers and teachers believe were the right methods.
I remember when I was in college I used to spend hours studying locked up inside my room. The idea was to stay in one place where there were no distractions.
The bed was a distraction, but I quickly turned it into a place of study, instead of a place to sleep. This destroyed my sleeping pattern. My mind stopped associating sleep with my bed.
I did not regret it though. I graduated at the top ten percent of my class and I was very satisfied.
